One Night, Big Impact: Sarah Drysdale Reflects on the Vinnies CEO Sleepout

Watch Sarah's diary here. Last week, CommBox COO and CPO Sarah Drysdale stepped outside her comfort zone and into the cold for her first-ever Vinnies CEO Sleepout. Alongside hundreds of business leaders across Australia, Sarah spent the night with little more than a sleeping bag, some warm clothes, and a deep resolve to raise awareness and funds for Australians experiencing homelessness.

A Night of Discomfort and Perspective

Before the event, Sarah admitted to feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. “I knew intellectually what the night would involve,” she shared, “but nothing could fully prepare me for the emotional weight of trying to sleep outside, even for just one night.”

The Sleepout offered more than physical discomfort, it provided stories, conversations, and moments of truth. Hearing firsthand from those who have lived through homelessness brought a new level of understanding and empathy. “It was confronting, humbling, and necessary. The stories I heard will stay with me for a long time. They reminded me that homelessness can happen to anyone, and that we can all play a role in making change.”

Why She Took Part

Sarah’s motivation stemmed from a desire to take meaningful action. “Raising funds is crucial, but I also wanted to open up conversations within the AV industry and broader business community about the real and growing issue of homelessness in Australia.” Through the event, she raised awareness and contributed to much-needed funds that directly support Vinnies’ homelessness services, from crisis accommodation to food and counselling.

She emphasised that while the Sleepout may be symbolic, its impact is real. “One night doesn’t compare to living without a home, but it sparks conversations, challenges assumptions, and encourages action. That’s powerful.”

A Message to Other Women in Leadership

Sarah also used the opportunity to call on other female leaders to get involved. “To any women thinking about doing the Sleepout, do it. Be bold. It’s a night of discomfort that can lead to real impact. For women and children especially, homelessness is often hidden and complex. We need more voices speaking up, raising awareness, and driving change.”

What’s Next?

With her first CEO Sleepout behind her, Sarah is already looking ahead. “I hope more leaders, especially from the AV and tech sectors, join in next year. If each of us brings attention, empathy, and action to this issue, we can make lasting change.”

From all of us at CommBox, we’re incredibly proud of Sarah’s leadership, empathy, and drive to be part of the solution.
